The reason why Project Codename GingerBeard isn’t Open-Source is because it uses Capita SIMS Business Objects. Which is good thing and to be fair to Capita, we want to protect they’re intellectual property (IP) which they’ve worked hard on – if you don’t want to protect Capita IP, then just think about the fact you don’t want to get sued.

Now although this gives us a number of positives it does however present a number of issues, firstly, it isn’t free – see Capita Partner Management Document. It’s £75 for secondary and £30 for a Primary school – this is before the cost of purchasing a SIMS license. Now to add to this if your charging for something people expect a level of service – your going to have to at least have a way of receiving customer data – which is a giant minefield in itself. Suddenly you can see the costs rocketing up and let’s face it, it’s not a program that is worth a lot of money. Which brings me onto my next point, a number of people have said why hasn’t Capita already included such a feature? And to be fair, they’re right, but we can’t have everything and unfortunately most of those people go about it in the wrong way – often people who refer to Capita as Cr@pita.

So this gives us two options, Capita says they’ll support it (on some level) or a company takes it on. As a half way point to the Capita supporting it, an Local Authority might take it up, however it would be unlikely that they would want to support additional schools for no extra money – then again, they would be able to offer it at a lower cost then a company as they don’t have to purchase the SIMS license.

Now you may wonder why a company would want to take a program which could die off when Capita releases something – well it could happen with anything that links into SIMS if we’re being honest. The trick is to be agile enough, Capita is slow, it has too many legacy features and too large a customer base to keep up with a smaller company. An example of how you could expand it would to be integrate it with a parents portals – so parents could update their details themselves, either from a touchscreen based device at the school or via online portal. Data could be passed through more advanced checking then just in SIMS .net, it could go in automatically, or require someone at the school to approve it (suspense mode). There are numerous options open and with education it’s normally a question of getting a foot in the door and GingerBeard could be an option – assuming branding is done right.

One of the biggest features I think it could be expanded to would be to allow the import of entire staff records. Think about it, teachers move between schools often within an Local Authority and payroll is managed by the Local Authority. With the Academies move, payroll services will be expanding across Local Authorities and be more centrally managed. Image if a teacher moves to another school with the Local Authority, the payroll service provider already has all the teachers details, it’s already checked the teachers qualifications, all those details along with the new contract information can be automatically setup in the new schools SIMS database without the new school ever having to lift a finger.

I’ve been working on my project Codename “GingerBeard”. Which is a small .NET application written in C# that uses Capita SIMS Business Objects to allow the end-user to bulk import information directly into the SIMS .net database and because it uses the approved Capita SIMS Business Objects it’s pretty safe to use. The only draw back is the licensing – basically limiting the release base to well, not many people

The latest release – version 0.7.9.4 dated 17/05/2012 – allows importing Email and UDFs into both Staff and Student records. Just to give you an idea, I manage to import a single-line text UDF for all 1,018 students in the Green Abbey School training database in 816 seconds!

Here’s a quick look at it so far

Codename GingerBeard - Homepage

So once you select one of the options (Staff, Student…), you then need to log into the SIMS database. (Sorry, I’ve yet to do Windows Authentications yet).

Codename GingerBeard - Logon

You can however expand it to change the server and database names

Codename GingerBeard - Logon (Expanded)

Once you’ve connected to the database you need to select the file you want to import

Codename GingerBeard - File Selection

It’s pretty straight forward, you can either use to browse button or you can type (or more likely cut and paste), the path – the OK button won’t go active until the path has been entered and it’s valid. You can select CSV, XML, XLS and other formats similar to CSV such as TXT – basically anything out of SIMS .net Reporting Engine (other then Word).

Codename GingerBeard - Matching

Once you selected the file, you need to match your import files headers with SIMS .net’s. At this stage all we’ve pulled through from SIMS is a list of UDFs, staff filters (for Staff only of course). As you define the headers, the preview table will update. My idea is sometimes I’ve found on this sort of matching screen in other applications a preview option would have be nice just to confirm my data is going to look OK and I thought it was better having it on one panel – so you don’t have to go back and re-map any mistakes.

Codename GingerBeard - Matching (Complete)

The preview table only displays (upto) 5 records. After all, you don’t want to wait. With the UDF, you have a drop-down to select which UDF you want to use, then you activate the other drop-down to define what that UDF will be matched to on your file. In this screenshot I was importing usernames – I did a quick bosh in Excel just so I had something to import. At the moment I’ve only got single-line Text to be able to be imported, I’ve started adding the code in for integers (numbers), but I’ve not finished it – it adds another layer of complexity that I don’t want to enter just yet.

Once you confirm you your links, it’ll then process your file – this will take a while as it also searches the SIMS database. At the moment I’ve got it under a single thread, so it appears to crash on larger files, it doesn’t however.

Codename GingerBeard - Ready for import

As you can see, it’ll give you a status for each record – so if it’s already imported, it won’t import again. If it can’t find the person, it won’t import. If it files multiple people, it won’t import. When you hit the Import button, once again, single thread, appears to crash, doesn’t – really need to look at multi threads.

Anyway, that’s pretty much it in a nut shell. Hopefully you can see how flexible it is.

Previously, I ran WordPress is a sub-folder, this suprisily cut down on spam by quite alot. So I’ve done this again, also I’ve setup a SSL certificate on my domain – logins are forced to use SSL.

My only problem was Windows Phone use a separate Root Certificate program to the Windows Root Certificate Program. Which sucks as StartSSL doesn’t, currently, appear on the list.

12 mins after emailing StartSSL I get a response that the are working on it, and if I want to manually add it to my device, I can go to www.startssl.com/certs/ca.cer and import the root certificate. Basically, if you’re on a Windows Phone, click the link, then click install. Sorted

I would highly recommend StartSSL, they offer free “basic” SSL certificates, offer excellent, fast support and by far more secure then others. They’re also honest and upfront which is the sort of thing you except when you’re deal with a trust service like SSL. Unlike Comodo.

When you purchase a Mythic-Beasts VPS, you haven’t just ordered a insecure server from a boy who runs his “company” from his bedroom. You’ve order a VPS done right. That means you have to install the OS. It’s the only way to ensure your server is secure and setup correctly with no extras that will cause you problems later. I’m not a fan of pre-configured images, after all they normally come with a root password of, yes, you’ve guessed it password. If you think, hey, now one will find my server, you are sorely mistake and it won’t take long before one of those automatic bots find your server.

Anyway on with the show. We’ve received our email from Mythic-Beasts with our SSH access to the console, our IP address and other settings such as DNS. We’re ready to go.

Now, I’m running Windows so, the first thing we need to do is to get an SSH client installed and we also need a VNC viewer as well. Let’s go get us Putty. Putty is an open-source, free, SSH client. I would recommend using the Windows Installer. The next thing we need to install is a VNC viewer, this will give us access to the virtual server as if we were in front of it – if that was possible. There are number of clients out there, the three main ones are RealVNC, UltraVNC and TightVNC. Now RealVNC is the most well known, however, they do commercial versions so you do feel like your getting a cut down version with the free edition. UltraVNC is full of ads. I don’t like this method. TightVNC is free and open-source with no ads. The only downside, if there is any, is that it looks a bit dated. It’s also what Mythic-Beasts recommend. So lets get TightVNC. The only thing I will say is to ensure you only install the viewer, you don’t need the server unless you want to view YOUR desktop screen.

So we’ve now got the software and we’re ready to go. The first step in Mythic-Beasts guide is to connect to admin console for your server. So lets fire up Putty and enter the address in the host name box (this is the address which ends in .vs.mythic-beasts.com). It should default to SSH port 22. Click open to start a session, you’ll then be prompted to access the servers SSH key.

Now your connect to the admin console let’s change the password, it’s not that I don’t trust Mythic-Beasts, it’s extra security – they email the password, so if you’re email gets hacked your not going to have a giant security hole. I recommend using something like KeePass to store and generate secure passwords – at least this way you don’t have to remember a million passwords and you’re still being secure. If you use multiple machines, look at DropBox to sync between multiple machines.

Now let’s find out what commands we have…

[mythic] admin> help

Just before we change the password, a word of caution, check your keyboard mapping. Mine was set to US rather then UK, so ” becomes @. So lets do it.

[matt40k] admin> passwd <SECURE RANDOM PASSWORD>

If we now return to Mythic-Beasts guide, they say to load the “cd”, in order to get a list of CDs, type

[mythic] admin> cdrom

Now this guide we’re going to install Debian like they recommend. So type:

cdrom debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst

This is basically the equivalent of putting the CD in the CD-Drive. Next we need to set the BIOS primary boot device – ie what the VPS will load when it’s next switched on. To do this we type

[mythic] admin> boot cdrom

Next we need to set a password for VNC, VNC is the way we connect our keyboard, mouse and monitor to the virtual server. We set the password by typing:

[mythic] admin> vnc-passwd <ANOTHER SECURE RANDOM PASSWORD>

The next step is to actual start the VPS.

[mythic] admin> start

Now our virtual servers running we need to connect to it using VNC, to get the details type in:

[mythic] admin> status

This will then give you the VNC IP address and the port. Open up TightVNC Viewer and in the Server enter the IP and the port with a colon between the two – for example 192.168.0.1:5000. Assuming you’ve done this right, you’ll then be prompted for the VNC password. Enter it and it’ll be as if you’re sitting in front of the server. Hopefully it’ll look like this…

So, let’s install Debian! Select Install and hit enter – it’s also a good idea to close your SSH connection to the admin console.

First option is to set the language, find English and hit enter (assuming your English)

We now need to set our location, hopefully it’ll default to United Kingdom, if not, find it and hit enter.

We now need to select our Keyboard layout, select it wrong and special characters will entered incorrectly and chaos will ensue.

You’ll then see what I like to call the whirly-bar-of-progress. Don’t worry, it’s not Windows, it doesn’t go backwards

Once the whirly-bar-of-progress has finished doing it’s thing, you’ll see how intelligent the Debian installer is, because it’s received a DHCP response to it’s request, it’s default to using a DHCP address, thing is, we don’t want an DHCP address, we want a Static IP. So tab to the <Go Back> option and press enter.

You’ll then get the configure the network options, select ‘Configure network manually‘ and press enter.

Now enter YOUR IP address. and press enter

Next is the subnet, it’s is most likely the default, 255.255.255.0. Check it is, then press enter.

Next you need to set the gateway, this is normally the same as your IP address only the last block is a 1. However, check!

Now lets set the DNS address, you should have been given two IP address, separate them with a space and press enter.

You need to enter a hostname, this is the computers name, not the full name (it doesn’t include the domain name), just the first part. Common names include location, roles that the server perform and type of server. I personally don’t like the idea of calling it with roles, unless you have a sense of humour and call your sql server dns-01, just have visions of a hacking trying to brake into your DNS server only to find out it doesn’t run DNS. Prgmr.com uses a number of naming conventions, anything is perfectly acceptable and it can be changed later.

Now we need to enter a domain name, if you haven’t registered a domain name, why not? If you haven’t use something that ends in .local. Or use .local if you don’t want it public (which would be bizzare as it’s public facing server).

Now enter a secure, and I do mean SECURE password and hit enter.

Re-enter the password you just entered to confirm it.

Now, it’s not good practice to use the root account, it’s basically using a sledge hammer to crack a nut, also, if other people are going to be using the server, we want to differentiated between different users, rather then everyone using root. So, enter your name – normally it’s firstname surname.

Now enter the username you want.

Enter a SECURE password…

and confirm it.

Now wait for the whirly-bar-of-progress to load the partitioning software so we can configure our disks

I would recommend using the ‘Guided – use entire disk‘. The encrypted LVM may sound like a good idea, keep your data secure, but it isn’t.

Now it’s time to select our disc, you should only have one, so lets hit enter – you’re size will depend on your package.

You now have to select your partitioning, if your installing a 3rd-party web admin tool such as Cpanel, DirectAdmin, Plesk or one of the many others, they many recommend a particular scheme. For this guide, well going for a single partition (well other then SWAP – the Linux’s version of Windows page file).

We now need to confirm the partitions are ok

Before it’ll be written to the discs. If you’re reinstalling your server, this is pretty much the last chance to abort before you wipe your virtual server and lose any data on it.

Well if you had data, you ain’t now. The whirly-bar-of-progress is creating your partition - destroying anything in it’s path like a.. something that destroys everything in it’s path

Next step the whirly-bar-of-progress will install the core OS files

Now because we’re using the netinst, which is smart, we’ll need to download the files. Because we’re nice (and we don’t want to wait), we’ll select a mirror as close as possible to us. Select United Kingdom

Now we need to select a specific server, the default is ftp.uk.debian.org, I personally use www.mirrorservice.org normally, but for this, we’ll use the default. I’ve not bothered doing speedtest and such, I assume someone will tell me if there is a better one. Maybe Mythic-Beasts will setup a mirror someday.

Because we’ve got a direct connection, ie we’re not going via a proxy, just press enter to continue.

Once again our friend the whirly-bar-of-progress will appear whilst it downloads the list of packages

We now get a prompt regarding usage survey, basically, this is how the project knows how many people are using it, well, we have nothing to hide so lets go for it. We like stats and pretty graphs with increasing numbers after all

The next section is defining roles. Personally, I wouldn’t do it here, I would keep this to absolute minimal, you can select nothing here, anything you don’t install you can install later via apt-get. I would recommend SSH Server so you can remote in later, you might not if you’re worried about system resources because you may want to use dropbear. System utilities is also a happy thing to have, but again, you can install it later.

The whirly-bar-of-progress will now download and install our required software.

Once the whirly-bar-of-progress is finished, you’re be asked to install GRUB, GRUB allows you to boot other operating systems or boot into a single user mode. I would highly recommend click yes.

Finally, we are done. Our system is install and ready to load for the first time. At this point we want to return to our Putty and connect back to our admin console – assuming you haven’t left it running

Once your connected, enter:

[mythic] admin> poweroff

It’ll then ask you to confirm you want to poweroff the server, press Y to confirm.

Now, we need to change the boot to the hard drive. So type

[mythic] admin> boot disc

and finally lets start the server back up.

[mythic] admin> start

If you’ve installed SSH Server, you’ll be able to use Putty to connect to your Server IP address. Otherwise you’ll have to continue using VNC. Once you’ve got connect to your server, login as your username, su to root, then check for updates. You do this by typing:

apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

Did you notice, no upgradesupdates? Despite all the security fixes Debian release – if you don’t believe me, join the Debian security announcement mailing list. Do you know why this is? Because were smart, because we used the netinst and download the latest version of the files. Nice.

There was an interesting article that caught my eye which was written by Eliza Browning regarding Etiquette and it’s importance in this modern age. She goes on to list 5 points. Each point is rather straight forward but often overlooked in today’s society. The first point she makes is to send a thank you note, she gives you the example of after an interview. Even if you don’t get the job, you want to create a good impression with the company, after all you are hoping to work for the company even if it isn’t today. You may get another chance later in life and the good impression you left will leave you in good stead for next time.

The next point she makes is knowing peoples names. It’s surprising how the people at the bottom appreciate the people at the top know them, even if it is just there name. It builds trust which makes people happy when changes occur. How many times have you heard people moaning about there work and how the bosses know nothing about what actually goes on.

The next two points go on to discuss the customer, the first is waiting until you’ve left the building before you discuss what just happened with colleagues, regardless of if they are around, after all they could pop up at any time. The other point is not to forget the personal touch of face-to-face meeting and to give people the attention they require and not to get distracted with smartphones. She describes her time working in a newspaper saying “when I worked in news, everyone was attached to a BlackBerry, constantly checking the influx of alerts. But my executive producer rarely used hers—and for this reason, she stood out. She was present and was never distracted in editorial meetings or discussions with the staff. And it didn’t make her any less of a success.”

You can read her full article here: http://www.inc.com/eliza-browning/business-etiquette-rules-that-matter-now.html.

Just cancelled my hosting package with Netcetera. Well it’ll cancel on the 02/05/2012. Just giving me over 1 week to move my website over. Which I’m still not 100% where I’ll move too.

To be fair to Netcetera, they’re 1st and 2nd line support is excellent, very responsive. They only problem I’ve had with them was a problem with importing my WordPress export, basically they had left it with the default 2MB memory limit for PHP. They said they couldn’t fix it, but it appears they’ve now increased it to 128MB. Be nice if they told me they’ll do it later, then tell me once it’s done. Still doesn’t matter as I managed to split my WordPress export anyway.

Sometimes my emails end up in peoples spam box, which is weird, turns out I’d setup SPF wrong, I had it setup to only allow mail from my MX servers, which it turns out is wrong for Google Apps. It should be:

v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all

I’ve also setup, again – I must have missed this off previously when I moved the nameservers around Domainkey.

I’ve hopefully sorted it now.

Update: Just noticed I need to add SPF as well as a TXT record for it to be happy, happy.

I’ve been having great fun with my Alix board or rather Pete at Mythic-Beasts has been. Basically, the AwardBIOS, which effectively I’ve paid a premium for, doesn’t support console redirect, despite having then option. After contacting PC-Engines, they’ve said to flash it with the TinyBIOS, which will give me console redirect, but render the VGA useless – which makes me wish I didn’t pay the premium to get the version of the board with VGA – my mistake, still make the first install I did dead easy. I don’t need VGA as Mythic-Beasts co-location is done properly, so I get access to a serial console and I’m not having to worry about video issues or weird Java issues.

After flashing, it appears to have died – or not flashed right, well turns out it was done to some power issue – basically, plug it in – it’s fine, reboot it, not fine. Which is weird as it worked with the AwardBIOS :S

Many moons ago, I was interested in Skype, it basically sounds like a really cool idea, free calls, but without a mobile device that supported it, it was useless to me. I’m not a fan of wireless PC peripherals, I’m still not happy that my XBOX controller isn’t wired. I love wires, you know where you are with them, rather then wireless stuff that the battery just dies in the most annoy time possible. The problem with a wired headset is your tethered to your desk as I found back in the days of playing BF2 whilst on TeamSpeak - surprised I didn’t do more damage rushing to the toilet whilst still having the headset plugged in and attached to my head.

I had planned to setup a Asterisk PBX when I had a bigger house, so calls could be routed to the home handsets and blah, blah, blah – all that geeky stuff we IT guys want to do, but often never do. When Microsoft bought out Skype and killed off Asterisk support. That dream died. No offence Microsoft, but you’re likely to bundle it with Windows Server, which is fine, good on you, it’ll work great for businesses, but when you look at latest version of Small Business need 12GB ram to run well. I ain’t got the money to pay the electric bill for that kind of server. Hopefully they’ll release a cut-down version for ARM-based systems, then maybe I could do it. Just thinking a clever router add-on perhaps – like the BT HomeHub, only better

I suppose to be fair, Microsoft is pushing the “cloud” agenda, so it’s unlikely, I guess I could get Virgin Media, plus some nice Skype phones, then pay Skype to get a “landline” number. Shame it’s got limited area prefixes.

Anyway, they’ve released a Windows Phone app - http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/microsoft-releases-10-version-of-skype-for-windows-phone/12520

Lovely. New Nokia Windows Phone, meet Mr Skype. Overall it seems pretty cool, the fact it currently run in the background suck, so really it’s only good for making calls, which doesn’t bother me. Just need more companies to support Skype – I guess that’s the Windows ServerExchange agenda – hey, we’ve got 1 million SkypeWindows Phone users – why not call them for free

The other pain is the lack of intergration, it doesn’t appear to link to much other then Facebook, which is great, but be nice if it linked into Windows Hub. Strange as that’s Microsoft baby, maybe it’s for a future release. I guess they need to open up the XBOX network first – oh that’ll be cool – use Kinect for calls, I guess that’s another reason to get the Kinect for PC.

Oh look – they are - http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/skype-for-xbox-revealed-in-job-posting-1076879

I love when everything comes together, it appears so does Microsoft.

Following a period of review in Autumn 2011 and Spring 2012 with school and LA customers we have given consideration to the current Change Request (CR) process, feedback from which is slow and gives rise to dissatisfaction.

LA and school colleagues may be aware that we have recently published our Technical and Product Roadmap documents. This effectively means that we know (in large part – there is some contingency) what we are going to be doing now up to and including the Spring 2013 release. Clearly priorities change and sometimes we do move items in the development backlogs around. However, Product Managers are aware which CRs are scheduled for inclusion in the next year, and which are not.

Previously we have left all CRs in the online repository that can be accessed and voted upon in SupportNet. However, this does cause dissatisfaction as some have been there a long time, there are duplicates and it is difficult for customers to spend a long time looking through the amount of submitted CRs. Therefore we are going to undertake a ‘cull’ of all CRs not included now the roadmap has been constructed. This will allow the CR process to begin again now for the following year.

We will shortly review all CRs and close all those that were created more than one year ago. Of those remaining we will remove all those that have received less than 20 votes. Closing a CR in the system will result in an email confirming that this has happened to be sent to the customer who raised the CR. If you feel strongly about the non-inclusion to date of a CR that you have raised then you can re-raise the CR for consideration for the following year’s product planning.

Consequently, we will be removing all non-included CRs, or those that do not meet the above criteria, at the end of March 2012.

Please be reassured that we are not simply ‘throwing away’ the vast amount of useful information we have collected in the CR database. These CRs, and the descriptions for improvement will continue to be used by Product Managers as the basis for future product planning for enhancements and, in due course, new versions of the software. Our review has shown that we have actually included many of the CRs in the software. For example, we have delivered 7 of the current top 10 SIMS Personnel CRs into the software – some over three years ago. Clearly we could have done a better job of communicating this and closing CRs. This pattern is generally repeated across the SIMS suite. By moving to an annual process we expect customers to be better informed about where any particular CR is in the context of the roadmap planning.

Finally and importantly, we are currently building a new system to record CRs with better tools for reviewing, commenting and voting on the submitted CRs as part of an improved customer portal. SupportNet was built many years ago and the technology for online communities to collaborate, share and discuss has improved massively in that time. This too, when it becomes available will further enhance how we manage, and you interact with CRs for the SIMS software.

Ages ago I signed up for a free Pingdom account to monitor my website, www.matt40k.co.uk. After a while I switched the monitor to another website, yesterday, I switched it back, well since yesterday I’ve been getting monthly status reports, not all at once but spread out with a few hours between each one, going back to when, I guess, I opened the account and increase by a month at a time. So I’ve just got an email with my sites uptime back in 2012-01-31, before that it was 2011-12-31. Weird uh?

Mythic Beasts is a Cambridge, UK based company who’s been going since 2000. They provide transit, peering, colocation, dedicated servers, virtual servers, shell hosting, basic web hosting and domain registration. They provide a professional service and are very Linux focused. They have a number of racks across London and Redstone’s Cambridge data centre. For more information visit: http://www.mythic-beasts.com/network.html.

One of the services I really like about Mythic-Beasts is the domain registrations, not that I don’t like Mythic-Beasts other services. My main gripe with other companies is that it is not instant, Mythic-Beasts have created a system using Nominet automated system (more info here: http://www.nominet.org.uk/registrars/systems/auto/), rather than buying a product of the shelf – or they’ve customized it very well :] – this system, at least I have found, to be instant, changing the DNS name servers are updated by Nominet within seconds rather than hours or even days. The free DNS servers they provide are also instantly updated, the only problem I’ve had is when they upgraded to IPv6 – something I need to check out soon – and DNS stopped updating, a problem that they quickly identified and resolved once I’d logged a call with them, just showing how good their support is.

One important thing to point out about Mythic-Beasts DNS services, one server is housed in house – NS2.mythic-beasts.com, and the other, NS1.mythic-beasts.com is hosted on ThePlanet (or at least it was last time I checked). This is completely separate from Mythic-Beasts network meaning that even if Mythic-Beasts network completely dies, even if the entire of the UK data centres loses power, connectively or whatever, you will still be able to resolve your Mythic-Beasts hosted DNS name, meaning my email will keep flowing.

Before you being, you need to create an account with Mythic-Beasts, this done by logging a call with them. Just remember, they are real humans working 9-5 jobs, being woken up to create an account so someone can register a domain is unlikely to happen at 3am.

Mr Darcy then left and drove off before answering any questions from the crowd including our question of what he means by *.

We followed Mr Darcy in a hope that we may find out. Unfortantely he was too fast for us. We did however, manage to track him down after his car also crashed leaving a poor teddy dizzy and in need of a cuddle.

Mr Darcy was finally spotted entering his castle. We have yet to seen Mr Darcy since despite breaching his castle – we assume he used the yellow emergency exit.

Today saw a tragic train crash in Ipswich. Hundreds of imaginary train passages were injured when the train collided with a car are high speed. The driver of the car has yet to be found, the police have said that the driver is missing and is presumably badly injured. They have however stopped searching due to the drivers transparent appearance.

A spokes person for the Darcy Transport company has issued this statement. “We apologies for the delay in our service and will have the train repaired and running again shortly”. When questioned with regards to the injured passages the company stated “we’re sure they’ll be travelling again with us soon”.

PC-Engines alix3d3 has in the BIOS an option to redirect the BIOS output over serial (com0), this would be ideal as I have serial access (at the moment) to mine which is currently colo’d. However, I never could get it to work and after contacting them regarding this we’ve discovered that it is no longer possible dispite trying the current BIOS firmware (alixbio7) and the older one (alixbio6) and even the beta BIOS (alixbio8).

Many thanks to Michael Steinmann at PC-Engines for trying it out, just shame it’s no longer possible. Have to say I’m starting to regret not getting the alix3d2 (with the RTC battery fitted).

mount_ffs: a4bd76d6338f527c.a on /: Device bus

During boot-up which meant / wasn’t being mounted as read-only, found out what was being busy, it was syslogcron – basically the cron logs where set to /var/cron/log in /etc/syslog.conf, so I’ve changed it to /var/log which is a RAMDISK. Reboot and it’s happy again.

Just to check it has actually worked:

# mkdir test
mkdir: test: Read-only file system

Yer, it worked

I have to say, OpenBSD is bomb proof, it just won’t die despite all my n00by actions. I’ve tried to updated the snapshot again, which failed, I then deleted the bsd.rd by mistake – I forgot I should have renamed and only removed it once I got a new copy – I managed to get a new (updated) copy on the system by getting ssh working again. Just totally amazed how robust OpenBSD is despite killing 90% of the system trying to fix a minor issue. I suppose the key is, redirect over Com0 and have serial access via a console server.
